We did this all weekend in celebration of my birthday! We used Yelp.com and the iPhone to find things to do and sites to see and had a blast wandering around our city. We ran across a gas-station turned organic market/browsing library. Great suggestion!

I try to do this every Saturday on my “solo Saturday adventures” and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something different, and yet usually very affordable.
However, a GPS comes in handy (not for finding your way, but for locating stories or diners that you previously didn’t know existed).
Don’t forget to take pictures of the little things. You never know when your hometown could change overnight, and you do want pictures to show your children someday, right?
